When I had to use a stroller to shop with my babies, I soon learned just how unaccomodating stores are. The aisles are too narrow and it is very hard to push a stroller. It was very eye opening to what it must be like to get through there with a wheelchair.

Very interesting information on this woefully underserved market. It is commonly thought that they do not have much spending power. Many small businesses (especially retail) do not take the needs of the disabled into consideration. I also notice this as one of my college classes was Interior Design. I had the challenge of designing a small apartment for an assisted living facility for an occupant who may be wheelchair-bound and sight impaired. Since that time, I have continued to take notice of physical access requirements when I enter an establishment.

Great point, Sueblimely. Caregivers, parents, relatives and friends would also frequent businesses that welcome customers with disabilities.

A great article Glenda. I would add carers to the 18% of the population who would also appreciate the things you suggest - a huge market indeed.
